The project is based in Dagoretti, which is a semi-rural area on the outskirts of Nairobi, and about an hour’s drive from the airport. You will be collected from the airport via minibus and taken to your accommodation at the resource centre. The accommodation is clean and basic with internal WC and showers. You will share a room with one other person of the same gender.

The centre is based in a large farmhouse with a converted garage and gatehouse that provide the workshop space. It has a small farm with a cowshed, chicken coop and bio gas plant among other farm structures.

There is a structured timetable offering a choice of activities providing the opportunity to share and learn new skills:

  • Teach basic IT skills: many girls have very little experience of using a computer. Work on a one-to-one basis to help the girls access information and develop their own interests.
  • Work in the crèche: young single mums are encouraged to bring their children aged nought to five to the sessions. You keep the children entertained whilst the mums learn new skills.
  • Organise workshops to share your practical skills that will help the girls to see things differently and explore new ways to earn a living. We need creative people, for example: fashion design, hair design, arts and crafts and people with business and marketing skills.
  • Get involved in campaigning and advocacy projects: develop material for the website and social media, use art, music and street theatre to raise awareness of the challenges that girls face.
  • Organise friendly football matches with local businesses to raise funds.
  • Get involved in rearing chickens and managing livestock on the farm.
  • Design and conduct small research projects to identify need and design sustainable interventions.

It’s not all work - there are organised trips at the weekend to Maasai Mara, Africa’s greatest wildlife reserve and the stunning beaches of Mombasa.
