Sri Lanka
The Rosie May Home offers an opportunity to get involved in a charity managed from Nottingham, but running an orphanage in Sri Lanka.
The Rosie May Foundation was founded in December 2003 following the brutal murder of 10-year-old Rosie May. In December 2004 the Asian Tsunami left over 1,000 children parentless in Sri Lanka, their homes destroyed and their education abruptly halted. After the Tsunami the orphans became the most vulnerable to abuse, violence, trafficking and exploitation.
The Rosie May Home is a unique and exciting concept where sisters are re-united and live together again as a family unit. Sri Lankan live-in house parents care for the 20 girls aged up to 18 years. The ethos of the Rosie May Home is to create a loving family home where each child is recognised and nurtured as an individual - to give the girls back their childhood and re-integrate them into the community. The children living in the home have been orphaned or abandoned and made homeless due to the Tsunami and poverty.
