Our targets
- To reduce carbon emissions by 10% from 2005 baseline by 2012/13.
- To reduce carbon emissions by 48% from 2005 baseline by 2020/21.
What are we doing?
Our participation in the Higher Education Carbon Management Programme requires us to commit to a series of programmes including capital projects, awareness campaigns, waste minimisation and energy efficiency.
All of NTU's electricity is purchased from a green energy provider and we generate our own energy on-site through two sets of solar PV panels and four combined heat and power units. We are also working on projects for more solar panels, wind turbines and biomass.
The Salix Revolving Green Fund provided us with £1 million of investment in capital projects such as the installation of energy efficient fans in labs and PC shutdown software. Money saved from these projects will be recycled to spend on further energy saving projects.
How are we performing?
Each year NTU is required to submit our energy usage and carbon footprint HEFCE and organisations for benchmarking exercises such as Universities that Count and the People and Planet Green League.
