Waste management
Across NTU's estate you will see sets of recycling stations encouraging everyone to recycle their waste. The University currently recycles 88% of the waste it generates, however we are always aiming to improve this by asking our staff, students and visitors to follow the waste hierarchy:
- Reduce e.g. Do you need to print the items out? If you do, can it be printed double sided?
- Reuse e.g. Will your unwanted clothing be of use to someone else? If so why not donate these to local charity rather than throwing them away? Many charities receive money for rag, so even if you think the clothes are too old and worn it's worth something to the charity shop.
- Recycle The recycling bins across the estate allow for paper / cardboard / plastic and can recycling. NTU's canteens also recycle their waste food!
- Dispose e.g. laminated paper. As a last resort items are taken away to go to landfill. This amount of waste should and can be reduced year on year.
Recycling
The recycling bin stations available across estate are made up of three types:
- Paper / cardboard
- Plastics / cans
- General Waste
Please help our recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by choosing the correct bin for your rubbish. We also provide facilities for you to recycle mobile phones and batteries which are located in the libraries across NTU.
Food waste collections are up and running in Newton Arkwright and will soon be rolled out to all of NTU's catering outlets. Any food waste e.g. tea bags, fruit / vegetable peelings can go in the caddies that will be located in kitchen and catering areas where it will be turned into compost.

Get creative with your rubbish! Share your recycling and reuse ideas and get tips to 'Make it Yourself' with Co-oproduct, a fantastic design organisation set up with the help of NTIU's Future Factory.
Big Clear Out
At the end of every academic year NTU holds a Big Clear Out campaign, claiming unwanted reusable items from students moving out of their halls of residence.
We collect kitchenware, textiles (clothes / bedding etc), shoes, bric-a-brac, dried/tinned food and electrical items and donate these all to local charities.
Since the project began in 2010, we have collected over 12 tonnes of reusable items, take a look at the 2011 Big Clear Out Newsletter to see where some the donations went. Look out on EcoWeb events pages for news of the Big Clear Out 2013.
