Undergraduate and Professional Education

Our Undergraduate and Professional Education team plays a significant role in the School of Education’s provision. They run programmes containing a unique blend of academic, applied and vocational perspectives. The success of these programmes has contributed to our growing reputation for research and innovative teaching.

Our aim is to continue to engage you through: foundation degrees, certificates and diplomas, honours degrees, masters degrees and a professional doctorate programme.

Colleagues are encouraged to be research active, publishing their work in respected journals, textbooks etc and giving papers at conferences both nationally and internationally. Projects undertaken by individual staff and research cluster groups are closely linked to areas of teaching, ensuring that our programmes are directly informed and enhanced by our research practice.

This was something that was particularly praised when the undergraduate courses were subject to an Internal Review, with the panel commenting: “It is well organised, has a flowing dynamic curriculum, reflecting the ever-changing trends within the subject and is delivered by an enthusiastic team which is responsive to national developments in education.” (Subject Review, Non-Ofsted, Autumn 2007).

Along with a commitment to flexible, innovative and responsive teaching, our team offers an inclusive, encouraging and supportive environment in which to study that is sensitive and responsive to the needs of students. Our teaching and research specialisms are diverse and include the following:

  • Early Years Education and issues relating to Childhood
  • Multi-agency working to support families and children
  • Social justice
  • Inclusive education practice
  • Use of ICT and technology in learning
  • Sports development and social inclusion in sport
  • Sport and disability
  • Flexible working in education
  • Employability
  • Psychological disorders
  • Intimate relationships
  • Cyber psychology

The team has extensive professional links with a wide range of organisations. From this we are able to generate an extensive array of placement opportunities for undergraduate students together with research opportunities for postgraduate students and staff.
