Prepare for PGCE Primary

Welcome to the PGCE Primary course website
2013 Entry

We look forward to working with you from September.

We hope you will find plenty of useful guidance and information so you can begin the course feeling well prepared and confident. You will already appreciate that the course will be very intensive and any pre-course study you undertake will no doubt support your progress.

Spending further time in a primary school is also a particularly effective way to ensure you are becoming more conversant with the role of the teacher and are developing a good understanding of the way children learn. Taking the opportunity to visit a range of schools and age groups will be invaluable.

We understand that PGCE students come from a range of different academic backgrounds and have differing skills, qualifications and experience. There are elements of the website which are essential preparation for all and this will be followed up during the course. We would expect all students to undertake these activities.

It is important that you reflect on your own needs and experience to make sure you make the best use of what is available. There are also many suggestions for reading, activities, Teachers TV and websites. All of which will be useful, however prioritising areas in which you feel least confident is a productive approach as well as exploring areas of particular interest.

The course structure

The PGCE Primary award was redefined nationally in 2007 and re-titled the Professional Graduate (rather than Postgraduate) Certificate in Education.

Students can now take some modules of the PGCE Primary at Masters Level, the successful completion of which entitles them to the alternative award of Postgraduate Certificate in Education. From September 2012 there will also be the opportunity to gain 120 Masters level credits resulting in a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. The achievement of gaining Masters level credits will also grant candidates fast-track entry onto Masters courses offered by NTU and other universities.

This section will give you the information you need to prepare for the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and the Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

Essential: QTS skills tests

In order to qualify for a place on the PGCE course it is essential that you pass the QTS Professional Skills Tests.

Visit the numeracy and the literacy webpages for further information and to try the practice tests.

Essential: Evaluating the core subjects

After you have read and followed the guidance in the Core Subject Sections, you need to complete these evaluations. Please bring completed copies of all three sheets with you on Monday 2 September 2013 as they will be used as part of a discussion with your professional tutor.
