School Direct
The School Direct Training Programme
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2012:
The Teaching Agency have recently announced changes to the deadlines for schools to register their interest and request places to the School Direct Programme. Please see our FAQs sheet below for the latest details.
NTU is pleased to be involved in the School Direct programme.
School Direct is an innovative new training route. It enables schools and groups of schools to recruit and select the trainees that best meet their and their partnership's needs, with the expectation that those teachers will go on to work in the schools where they trained.
There are two courses:
- The School Direct Training Programme
This is open to all graduates. It is funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee who may may be eligible for a bursary from the Teaching Agency. - The School Direct Training Programme (salaried)
This is an employment-based route into teaching for high quality graduates with three or more years' career experience. They will be employed as an unqualified teacher by a school. The Teaching Agency provides funding, which the school can use to subsidise the trainee's salary and / or training. This replaces the current Graduate Training Programme (GTP).
The training programme will be managed and delivered jointly by the school and the University as the trainee progresses towards gaining a postgraduate qualification in education (PGDE or PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status.
Teaching Agency Funding
The School Direct Training Programme is funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee. The salaried programme is partially funded by the Teaching Agency, who subsidise the salary. The rates are dependent on location and subject area. The employing school may choose to subsidise the tuition fee.
Funding is available for Primary mathematics and Primary non-specialist trainees, and the following Secondary subjects:
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Chemistry
- Modern Languages
