The School of Education is a long-established and highly regarded centre for training teachers for primary, secondary school and further education colleges.
Trainee teachers develop good subject knowledge and gain a range of experiences in the classroom and other settings, giving them a wider understanding of children's learning. This preparation makes the trainees very attractive to schools and the proportion of NTU teacher trainees who find teaching employment after graduation is above the national average (OFSTED Report 2010).
We have extensive partnership arrangements with local schools and colleges which means that you benefit from the expertise and guidance of practicing teachers as well as from your university tutors.
Teaching qualifications
We provide undergraduate and postgraduate initial teacher-training routes for primary and secondary education, which leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), the accreditation required to legally teach pupils in state maintained or special schools. Our courses for post-compulsory education leads to eligibility for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS), which is the licence required to practice in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
Primary and secondary education - undergraduate route
If you want to study for a degree and complete initial teacher-training at the same time, we offer BA and BSc undergraduate routes with QTS.

Primary and secondary education - postgraduate route
If you are a graduate we provide a range of one-year, full-time taught PGCE courses. Our PGCE Primary course is focused on providing sound, basic knowledge of all the subjects in the curriculum for Key Stages One and Two.
The Secondary PGCE courses cover a range of subject specialisms, ideal if you have a degree related to the subject that you want to teach.

Our employment based programmes provide primary or secondary teacher training, allowing you to qualify as a teacher whilst you work.
Subject knowledge enhancement courses
If you want to train as a Secondary Mathematics or Science teacher and do not have the necessary qualifications to enter an Initial Teacher-Training programme such as a PGCE or GTP, we provide subject knowledge enhancement courses to improve your subject expertise prior to your training. Booster courses
Approved by the Teaching Agency (formerly the TDA), these short courses are free to those who have secured an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) place for September 2012 and who wish to train as secondary teachers. They are aimed at graduates who either completed their degree some time ago, or their degree didn't cover all aspects of the current secondary school curriculum. These courses will keep you up to date with your subject knowledge.
Post-compulsory education and training - Lifelong Learning Sector
This course is ideal for those working or who want to work as teachers/trainers in a range of post-compulsory educational settings from higher and further education to career guidance, community learning and public or private sector work-based learning.

Come along to one of our teacher-training open days to find out more about our postgraduate courses. The events are held in the Ada Byron King building, Clifton campus, between 4 pm and 7 pm.
