Primary Languages - Back in the Spotlight
Details:
The event, organised in collaboration with EMILE at Nottingham City Council, aims to showcase local, regional and national talent in order to prepare and inspire delegates to face impending curriculum change. Delegates will be able to choose between a series of workshops focusing on practical activities and will leave with lots of ideas which can be used in the classroom.
Workshops include:
Embedding a Global Link in the Curriculum
This workshop examines how to broaden the impact of a school link across the whole of your school. It will feature examples delivered by colleagues from schools in Nottingham City who are linked with schools in Rwanda. It will also explore examples of simple yet effective projects, how to overcome some of the frustration due to limited communication between schools as well as funding opportunities which are available to support a link.
Making a Mark: Introducing and Developing Writing Without Tears.
You are not alone if you shy away from getting your pupils to write in the language taught in your school! If you would like to develop writing from copying to more creative and confident use of the written language, this session is intended to help. Lots of practical approaches to introducing and developing writing skills throughout Key Stage 2 will be demonstrated during the session.
Keep Fit Languages
Language learning can be combined with daily physical activity to enhance pupils’ performance and improve their motivation and capacity to learn. The workshop explores a range of activities including action songs, brain gymnastics, coordination challenges, chasing games and other fun physical activities. The session will also consider how the strategies can be used for home learning and as a transition tool between primary and secondary schools. It will include activities in French, Spanish and German although no specific language skills are necessary to participate in the session.
Son a son! An Active Approach to French Phonics Teaching
Delegates choosing this workshop will be presented a project developed in Devon at the request of teachers to improve pupils’ pronunciation, reading and spelling skills in French in primary and lower secondary schools. Written by expert phonics and primary French teachers, the resulting resource, Take10 Phonics en français, builds systematically on the pedagogy of synthetic phonics with which children have become familiar in English. The interactive disk provides a wealth of fun activities including poems, songs, tongue twisters, games and finger rhymes as well as providing teachers and learners with a complete systematic guide to French phonics.
Using iPads in the Primary Languages Classroom
This workshop explores how iPads can be used to engage young learners and support all aspects of their language-learning journey. Whether you have access to one iPad or a class set, or if you are still considering how to persuade your leadership team to invest in school iPads, this session has something for you. It will explore apps that support class-based work, how animations and digital recordings can enhance your primary languages classroom, and how you can use iPads to create personalised learning programmes to support children of all abilities (including those in a mixed-age setting) in literacy, oracy and intercultural understanding.
How International Links Can Raise Self-Esteem and Perceptions across a School Community
Dunkirk Primary School in Nottingham City decided to link with a school in Pakistan. This workshop discovers the reasons behind this decision and how the link has become an intrinsic part of teaching and learning and has promoted community cohesion.
The Keynote speaker will be Elaine Taylor, HMI (Ofsted), National Advisor for Modern Languages.
There will also be opportunities to meet, and network with, colleagues in the beautiful surroundings of the Nottingham Conference Centre. Housed in the Grade II* listed Newton building, the Centre offers superb facilities in a stunning architectural setting.
The event costs £100 + VAT.
