Learn eTwinning in three easy steps

The British Council eTwinning team is offering free online training sessions this autumn to help you get the most from the eTwinning portal.

Delivered by experienced eTwinning users, these hour-long webinars include live on-screen presentations, a walk through of the eTwinning website and QandA sessions.

ALL Membership for Trainee Teachers

ALL work hard to represent and support the language community and believe that teachers need to speak with one voice to influence languages education. They keep their members up-to-date with all that’s happening in the world of languages.

Trainee teachers can become ALL members through their low-cost Student Associate Membership.

Ground-breaking languages project to expand with new funding

A ground-breaking project to bring language learning to disadvantaged communities is to be introduced to new audiences thanks to a €168k grant awarded to Nottingham Trent University.

The money, from the European Commission’s Lifelong Learning programme, will be used to continue the work of the VIVACE project, which introduced activities such as language classes, languages study circles, singing, dancing, drama and cookery to a range of settings, from prisons to church halls and community centres.

International School Award

The British Council International School Award has been established for more than ten years in the UK and is now gradually being introduced in schools all around the world.

The ISA offers:

  • a framework for international partnerships and global learning
  • recognition for teachers and their schools
  • opportunities to raise the school's profile through local and national media.

The ISA accreditation framework helps you to record and evaluate international work and embed it into the curriculum and whole school ethos.

The British council currently have 69 schools participating in the International School Award across Nottingham City and would like to invite further schools across the City to participate. It is free of charge and is a very accessible and supportive framework around which to build and develop your own school's international journey.

The Challenge Fund

The Challenge Fund provides support for joint thematic activities between UK and German partners and is designed to encourage young people to:

  • pick a subject or theme of their choice and explore it in an international context
  • take a fresh look at cross - or extra-curricular project work, with or without a language element
  • take an active role in a practical, 'hands-on' team venture
  • work together towards a concrete outcome, product or event of their choice.

Immersion courses

Annual courses in France and Spain for Primary School and Secondary School Teachers, focusing on language and methodology

Aims for Primary Immersion courses:

  • to improve methodological expertise in the teaching of French to young learners
  • to provide participants with materials and ideas suitable for the teaching of French at primary level
  • to develop cultural awareness and understanding of contemporary France
  • to improve participants' competence and performance in French
  • to use Internet and other ICT resources in your class.

Aims for Secondary Immersion courses:

  • to develop cultural awareness and understanding of contemporary France
  • to debate current issues and (re)discover contemporary French personalities
  • to use Internet and other Information and Communications Technology (ICT) resources in the classroom
  • to use contemporary novels, songs, short stories and films in the classroom
  • to enhance participants' discursive skills, update their vocabulary and gain new ideas and materials for use in the classroom
  • to enhance methodological expertise in the teaching of French to teenagers.

Special Interest Group For World Languages

The Association for Language Learning has a Special Interest Group For World Languages and a discussion list which it has just opened for public access. The list enables teachers and people with an interest in languages to have somewhere to go, as well as to the larger forum of Linguanet.
