Special and inclusive education

The School of Education has specific expertise in Special and Inclusive Education. We have developed a range of exciting professional development courses that focus on issues of educational and social inclusion. These are set within a context of diversity, equity and responding to learner voice.

Our Special and Inclusive Education courses are tailored to meet the needs of a wide range of professionals working in education and training settings. They are designed to be flexible and respond to the fast-paced developments concerning the education of learners with special educational needs and disabilities. All of our courses enable participants to focus on their own practice and explore their own values around inclusion, linking this to the very latest professional initiatives, research and theory.

Our courses are modular, providing a choice of topic areas to be studied, for example:

  • managing behaviour
  • diversity and achievement
  • perspectives on SEN and inclusion
  • strengthening SEN support through measuring impact
  • developing change with inclusive interventions
  • increasing participation and learner voice
  • specific Learning Difficulties*
  • working inclusively with learners with Autism Spectrum Disorders*
  • developing the professional role of the SENCO*
  • leading inclusion*.

Our tutors all have extensive professional experience in working in special and inclusive education settings. They are involved with national initiatives, research and projects, which inform the content of our courses. Current projects include Teaching Agency initiatives relating to professional developments for trainee and practicing teachers in special educational needs, research for a local authority into raising girls’ aspirations and achievement and a CPD project on SEN and inclusion for NQTs.

Our tutors also maintain a national profile through scholarly activity, which includes publication of books and journal articles, presentations at national and international conferences and study leave in countries such as Canada, Australia and Japan.
