Copyright advice

NTU's Copyright Advisor is happy to work with colleagues to advise and assist with copyright matters, particularly when concerned with the creation and provision of study materials.

NTU has a number of licences enabling the copying of certain types of material for use as study materials covering newspapers, broadcasts, images and some print based books and journals.

But, that said, putting other people's work on the NTU Online Workspace (NOW) digitises that work, and the licences alluded to above do not necessarily allow us to digitise those materials. Even if permission has been granted in the past to reproduce third party material, it will not automatically mean that the material may be digitised. Permission may have to be sought again.

However, it may be possible to digitise certain books and journals owned by the University as we have a Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) HE Photocopying and Scanning Licence. This allows designated people to digitise work from a range of publishers from around the world within clearly defined limits. Certain types of materials are excluded:

  • Printed music (including the words)
  • Maps, charts
  • Newspapers
  • Any work on which the copyright owner has expressly and prominently stipulated that it may not be copied under a CLA licence
  • Workbooks, workcards or assignment sheets

Additionally, certain individual titles or publishers are also excluded – lists of these are available on the CLA website.

All items digitised under the terms of the CLA licence must have a copyright notice attached and have to be recorded and reported to the CLA. It is, therefore, advisable to seek advice before you upload third party material onto NOW.

If in doubt, ask!
