Staff only setting

Staff use only
There is a setting in TurnitinUK that prevents students from seeing the Originality Reports that are generated. This will be used where teams wish to use TurnitinUK for help with the detection of academic misconduct only. In this scenario students have no visual clues that their work is being submitted to TurnitinUK.

Points to consider
The first consideration here is that students should be informed of the use of TurnitinUK, with a clear explanation of why the service is being employed. A clear statement should appear in the programme and respective module handbooks at the start of the academic session. The statement should set out the rationale for use in addition to the specific submission requirements expected of each student.

Careful thought must be given to the agreed use of TurnitinUK by staff so that use is fair and equitable. Clear guidelines must be agreed as to when and why the Originality Report will be accessed. It should be noted that the use of the percentage match is not considered an adequate reason alone for checking an individual originality report.

Suggested guidelinesĀ

a. Checking all Originality Reports:
To avoid any accusations of bias or victimisation all Originality Reports are scrutinised before marking.

b. Checking a sample:
Rather than scrutinise all Originality Reports, a random sample is chosen for checking. In the course of marking an assignment (that was not included in the sample) if reasonable doubt about the originality of the piece is raised, then the Originality Report can be used as part of the investigation that would normally take place under these circumstances.

c. No Originality Reports are checked unless there is reasonable doubt about the originality of the work:
This option is recommended where the tool has been used formatively with students.
