Statistics Tutorial

Project title: Statistics Tutorial

Date: in progress.

Collaborators: Chris Terrell-Nield, Mark Crowley and Paul Butler.

Details
The first unit of the tutorial features introductory tutorials concerned with defining and explaining everyday statistical terms and concepts.

The second unit presents descriptions and working examples of eight different statistical methods. Each of the methods includes a working scenario to demonstrate the application of the test, and a customised Excel file to demonstrate the steps involved.

The third unit of the tutorial presents two student activities:
  1. Students are presented with 13 different scenarios. The first one relates to the calculation of descriptive statistics, which students are asked to carry out and then answer questions on the results. Students are then required to employ a suggested statistical method to analyse data and then answer a series of questions on the results in a self-test section.
  2. The second part of the unit presents a case study entailing data sets collected during a research project. For each data set, students are asked to carry out the statistical analysis which is most appropriate for that data, and to provide comments on the results.
Features
  • A useful interactive decision tree diagram is included to help students determine which statistical test would be the best for the given set of circumstances.
  • Throughout the tutorials, word definitions and book references are displayed in small popup windows using a Flash tool developed by Mark Crowely from the Centre of Effective Learning and Development.
