Gender
The University is committed to tackling unlawful discrimination and harassment on the grounds of gender (sex) and to promoting equality of opportunity between the sexes, in accordance with its public duty.
There are two main ways in which it does this: one is through the Equality Scheme which is the framework within which teams across the University set objectives for progressing equality in their area of work. To inform the SES, NTU monitors the recruitment, achievement and experiences of students and the recruitment, pay levels and experiences of staff.
The second main way the University tackles equality is through Equality Impact Assessment (EIA). NTU reviews all existing or proposed new policies for a positive or negative impact on equality. If something is found to be potentially negative, solutions can be found before it is implemented.
There is also a suite of family friendly policies. These can have a greater impact on women than on men because women are statistically more likely to have domestic carer responsibilities.
The Equality Act 2010 protects against discrimination and harassment on the grounds of sex, marriage, pregnancy, maternity or gender reassignment. Sex discrimination is unlawful in employment, education, advertising or when providing housing, goods, services or facilities. Access information about Sex Discrimination at the website of the UK government.
If any student or member of staff feels they are being bullied or harassed due to their gender, they can source advice through our Harassment Adviser Service.
The University is also a member of Opportunity Now, an organisation for employers who are committed to creating an inclusive workplace for women. Through this membership, all NTU staff can access a wide range of information and resources relating to the promotion of gender equality.
The University is keen to institute formal consultation mechanisms with members of staff and students of different genders, and warmly invites them to contact the Engagement Officer in confidence to discuss suitable ways in which we can gain their feedback on different aspects of University life.
