The University is committed to tackling unlawful discrimination and harassment on the grounds of race (ethnicity) and to promoting equality of opportunity between the sexes, in accordance with its public duty.
There are two main ways in which it does this: one is through the Equality Scheme, which is the framework within which teams across the University set objectives for progressing equality in their area of work. To inform the SES, NTU monitors the recruitment, achievement and experiences of students and the recruitment, pay levels and experiences of staff.
The second main way the University tackles equality is through Equality Impact Assessment (EIA). NTU reviews all existing or proposed new policies for a positive or negative impact on equality. If something is found to be potentially negative, solutions can be found before it is implemented.
Guidance on good practice within higher education institutions in relation to race and ethnicity is available through the Equality Challenge Unit.
The Equality Act 2010 protects against direct and indirect discrimination and harassment on the grounds of race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin. It also places a statutory duty on all public bodies to promote equal opportunity, eliminate racial discrimination and promote good relations between different racial groups. Access information about Racial Discrimination at the website of the UK government.
The University is also a member of Race for Opportunity, an organisation committed to improving employment opportunities for ethnic minorities across the UK. Through this membership, all NTU staff can access a wide range of information and resources relating to the promotion of gender equality.
If any student or member of staff feels they are being bullied or harassed due to their race, they can source advice through our Harassment Adviser Service.
The University is keen to institute consultation mechanisms with its black and minority ethnic (BME) staff and students, and warmly invites them to contact the Engagement Officer to discuss suitable ways of gaining their feedback on aspects of University life.
