The purpose of the scheme

The Single Equality Scheme (SES) is a framework for recording and helping to coordinate the work on equality for students and staff that the University is engaging in at all levels.

Focused on the nine protected groups identified in the Equality Act 2010, it looks at work across the institution promoting equality for these groups:

  • age
  • gender
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • belief
  • gender reassignment
  • race
  • disability
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • sexual orientation.

Why we must do it?

The Equality Act 2010 requires that all public bodies demonstrate how they will promote equality and prevent discrimination. We are required to set objectives and report on these.

Monitoring and Review

The Scheme runs over three year periods to allow for longer term planning. The first iteration covered 2008-2011. The second began in 2011 and plans through to 2013. We will publish an end of year progress report in December of each year and update the action plan accordingly.

Who is responsible?

The Equality and Diversity Team is responsible for the development of a Single Equality Scheme for the University. Deans and Heads of Service are responsible for identifying equality objectives for their service or academic areas.

How do we set objectives?

Objectives are set on the basis of evidence. We consider evidence to fall into two broad categories: qualitative (what people tell us) and quantitative (what the statistical data indicates).

In terms of how we ask people, we will use a variety of means such as surveys, focus groups and staff networks etc. We will use internal and external comparative data to make our assessments.
