Material support
Do you need to:
- develop a new product, or rethink an existing one
- experiment with and evaluate new sustainable materials
- research manufacturing processes
- model concepts through prototyping and pre-production validation
- test commercial viability?
Would you like access to:
- laser cutting machines
- fully equipped metal and timber machining workshop
- laser scanner
- technology studio
- electronic workshop
- materials testing laboratory
- structural testing area
- acoustic and lighting laboratories
- a range of design software?
Working with the Future Factory can give you access to a wealth of technical resources across the University backed by the expertise to utilise them in the most effective way. Our technicians can work with you to familiarise you with the equipment, and help with your product design and development.
A taster of the product prototyping equipment available
Waterjet Cutting Machine
A £100,000 machine which cuts almost any material (including metals, ceramics and plastics) to a depth of 150mm using pure water, or a water and ceramic-mix for more resistant materials. Industrial uses range from cutting fish fillets to complex titanium aerospace components. The machine operates at twice the speed of sound!
Dimension Rapid Prototype Printers
This piece of kit has the capability to print 3D shapes in ABS plastic at increments of .25mm. Any design can be produced including pieces with internal parts thanks to the use of a support material which is dissolved on completion of the design. This is the current tool of choice for producing models or full-scale prototypes.
SCM CNC 3Axis Router
A large format CNC router can cut and mould plastics and aluminium. The machine is suitable for both 2D and 3D designs.
