Schools, teachers and practitioners
Our Schools, Colleges and Community Outreach (SCCO) team are here to help you:
- raise young people's awareness of higher education opportunities
- support students through the process of applying to university.
Our outreach and widening participation activities are delivered in both primary and secondary schools as well as on our three campuses:
We develop and implement initiatives that have a specific focus on raising attainment and develop additional opportunities to support successful transition from further to higher education:
- taster sessions
- study skills workshops
- a reciprocal shadowing scheme for teachers and lecturers.
We target Widening Participation pupils from the most disadvantaged areas with the lowest rates of progression to higher education. Widening Participation refers to pupils who have the ability to progress on to higher education, but also who fulfil at least one of the following criteria. For example, pupils who:
- were previously identified as being in the Aimhigher cohort
- come from a disadvantaged background
- are in receipt of free school meals
- are currently looked-after or in care
- have a disability
- are currently disengaged or, in your professional opinion, require additional intervention to increase motivation and attainment.

Working with parents and carers
We recognise how important it is to work with key influencers in the decision-making process. We engage with parents and carers through higher education (HE) talks, family suppers and celebration events following our residential summer schools. We are happy to have a presence at school HE events attended by parents.
Our students as positive role models
We train and support our students who engage with local schools and colleges as mentors, ambassadors and classroom assistants through our Students in Classrooms schemes. We also have strong links with community organisations through our volunteering programmes.
