We help the environment
We are committed to helping the environment. We are only one of seven higher education institutions to receive the Platinum Award from the Environmental Management System (EMS) Award Scheme and have also been named as one of the UK’s most environmentally friendly universities in the People & Planet Green League. You can help us to make a difference to the environment while studying at NTU.
Green travel
We have worked with the council to help design cycle routes across the city and between the University campuses ensuring your safety within Nottingham. That's why we run our Ucycle project to enable students to travel quickly and cheaply while getting fit. You will receive the full complimentary package, if you hire a bike. This includes a maintenance session, access to free Ridewise training, advice and information from the NTU Cycling Officer. Your hire fee for the whole academic year will be just £35 (plus a £60 refundable deposit). See our Ecoweb pages for full details about the Ucycle scheme and other green ways to travel across the city.
Join Raising and Giving (RAG)
RAG is part of a national Students' Union initiative to raise money for different charities including environmental concerns. Last year our students travelled across the UK and beyond last year, raising an amazing £78,477.82 for global charities. Our students, with the help of RAG, have also organised environmental initiatives such as Clothes Swap events to promote Fairtrade Fortnight.
Are you adventurous? Do you enjoy a challenge? Last year NTU students took part in the following adventures in the name of charity. They climbed:
- the Inca Trail up to Machu Picchu for the Children's Trust
- Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania for Childreach International
- up to Everest Base Camp in Nepal for Childreach International.
Next year it could be you!
Get involved in our Carbon Elephant project
Our Carbon Elephant initiative gets students involved in reducing our carbon footprint by:
- nominating their team or department to join the project
- volunteering to become an Eco Champion or a Green Impact auditor.
Volunteering as a Green Impact auditor will help you to boost your CV. You will also develop skills that are highly desirable in the workplace, no matter what you are studying.
Recycling
Recycling stations are located across the NTU campus, encouraging students to recycle plastic, cans, paper and card. We currently have 86% recycling rate and aim to keeping improving on this year on year!
