Languages and International Studies

Overview

Recognised nationally and internationally for its distinctive focus on the contemporary world, Language and International Studies (LIS) has a longstanding commitment to ensuring that learning opportunities, well structured and inspiring, are relevant to tomorrow's workplace.

LIS combines teaching, research and consultancies in modern languages (Chinese [Mandarin], French, German, Italian and Spanish) with International Relations, European Studies and Global Studies with many of our courses directly informed and enhanced by the investigations and findings of our research groups.

We offer an inclusive and friendly learning environment for all our staff, students and visitors, offering a range of activities with an international flavour, from field trips to film showings, and research seminars to student conferences.

For students across the University and members of the community alike, our University Language Programme provides tailored and level-appropriate language learning opportunities on the City site, in a wide variety of languages.

  • Arabic
  • English as a Foreign Language
  • Chinese (Mandarin)
  • Dutch
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Spanish
  • Russian.

LIS has a proud record of excellence in research including highly regarded publications and guest editorships with leading journals, as well as textbooks, readers and media articles. Our research groups are each closely linked to areas of teaching, and researchers are regularly invited to participate in key international conferences. LIS is also highly respected for its engagement in outreach, widening participation and consultancies, taking a lead role in projects that encourage language learning for all such as Routes into Languages and Vivace.
