Nottingham Trent University graduates receive journalism honours
Two graduates from the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism at Nottingham Trent University have received awards in the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Awards for Excellence in Journalism 2008.
MA in Newspaper Journalism graduate, Paul Prowse, was named Student Feature Writer of the Year after his tutor submitted the entry, consisting of two feature articles, on his behalf.
The features on speed dating and environmental health - when he shadowed an environmental health officer for a day – were written by Paul as part of his NCTJ-accredited course.
Paul said: "I was unsure whether to enter the awards because the standard is always so high, but then I found out my tutor, Dave Welford, had already sent my articles off. I’m very grateful to him for doing so because he has the experience to recognise what constitutes a good entry and it’s very flattering to win such a prestigious award."
Dave Welford said: "Paul is a fantastic feature writer whose considerable skills should take him a long way in the industry."
In the same category, Kelly Shorrock took away the award for Trainee Feature Writer of the Year. Kelly is a Media and Cultural Studies and Newspaper Journalism graduate from Nottingham Trent University and is now a trainee at The Derby Evening Telegraph.
They were presented with their awards by NCTJ chief executive, Joanne Butcher, and Guardian editor, Alan Rusbridger, at the Society of Editors’ Conference in Bristol, where they also had the opportunity to meet several high-profile industry representatives.
