Computer Mediated Discourse

Project Title: Computer Mediated Discourse
Project Leader: Dean Hardman

Description: Computer Mediated Communication is the term that has come to be used by scholars referring to the study of online human interaction and the ways in which individuals and groups:

  • construct their identities
  • build relationships
  • establish communities
  • interact with each other in a series of online environments.

The aim of this project is to consider online communication from a discourse analytical perspective. As human communication in virtual environments is increasing, so too is the need for linguists and discourse analysts to engage with the discourse of these contexts and environments, and the book provides an outline for academics to follow when teaching modules in the fast-growing sub-discipline of computer mediated communication.
