We seek to provide students with the breadth of vision and secure foundation in the theory and practice required for work as public historians or in the museum and heritage sector. Taught by academic staff and leading practitioners, our courses are available both full and part-time. Within an underpinning academic framework, they are skills-based with an emphasis on heritage management, collections care, interpretation, education, IT, teamwork and communication.

Student numbers are kept low as we feel this is vital for training in a practical subject. There are study visits associated with every module and placements with a relevant organization, site or museum. Students work closely with museums, the National Trust, other heritage agencies and relevant heritage centres.

We are:

  • recognised by the Museums Association for attainment of the AMA through route C, for in-service training leading to an AMA through route D, and a PG Certificate
  • Validated by the Sector Skills Council (CCSSC).

Postgraduate Certificate programmes

The certificate programmes are designed to deliver in-service training for museum and heritage staff, and volunteers covering four key areas:

  • Heritage Visitor Studies
  • Heritage Interpretation and Learning
  • Collections Management
  • Basic Management Skills for Heritage.

The certificate programmes run alongside the MA and PGDip programmes which are validated by the Museums Association and Sector Skills Council.

Taught sessions vary between 6 and 10 weeks and take place one day each week at the University’s Clifton Campus or on visits to heritage organisations. The workplace project continues for a further 20-24 weeks at your own place of work.

Certificate students would normally have to fulfil the University’s entrance requirements.
