Energy and Environment Security (EES)

About EES

EES offers both an academic and policy oriented team of researchers who study a range of contemporary security concerns, especially looking at the crisis in energy security and environmental human security issues, many of which overlap. The core aim of the Group is to produce high quality timely research in these research fields. It also aims to act as a focus for funding applications and grant capture. It will act as a network coordinator for a group of international scholars as well as for those based onsite in NTU and produce an online journal from 2009, planning for which is currently in progress.

The Group draws on a range of disciplinary skills. All of the contributors are interested in contested arguments about security and how the contemporary security agenda has continued to change in the 2000s. While the main focus of our Group is practical, these ongoing theoretical debates about security and securitisation form part of the current context of the Group’s work.

EES have a range of regional interests, including:

  • the European Union
  • the Black Sea and Caucasus
  • the Caribbean
  • the Middle East
  • East Asia
  • the Pacific islands region.

They also have a range of interests in local economic development, regeneration and environmental policy at a local level both in the UK and elsewhere. We put an equal emphasis on policy making and implementation, and on technology issues and the identification of effective technological solutions to energy and environmental problems. We also have experience on working on technology diffusion.

EES aims to produce a body of publications, including academic journal articles and books as well as a refereed online journal, which has an international editorial board.

Related courses

We draw on a range of expertise and colleagues contribute to a wide variety of teaching. In particular, they are associated with both the MA International Relations and the new MA Human Security and Environmental Change.

EES welcomes PhD students whose interests are affiliated to its core concerns. Group staff have extensive experience of successful PhD supervision. You would be joining an active and dynamic team of colleagues who work well together and provide a positive and focused context in which you pursue your own research interests. If you are interested you should either apply to the Group Director or directly to the College of Arts and Education Graduate School. To be awarded a place to study for a PhD, your application will need to be approved by the Graduate School, who work in coordination with subject staff.

The Group aims to offer a one-week PhD student summer school on aspects of sustainable energy policies from 2009. The first will be in based Nottingham, the second will be at our partner institution at the University of Izmir in Turkey.
