In-sessional English
Nottingham Trent University offers non-assessed, non-credit bearing English Language Support to all International Students for no additional cost.
Our lecturers, experienced in teaching English for Academic Purposes, will work with you to improve your English language as well as your study skills and also explain UK Academic conventions related to your subject.
Academic English classes will help you with in the following areas:
Reading
You will develop your critical reading skills and knowledge of how academic texts are structured to help you use academic texts more effectively.
Writing
You will learn how to write what you mean in an accurate, academic way.
Speaking
You will practise spoken English to increase your fluency and enable you to contribute to academic discussion.
Listening
You will improve your listening skills to increase your understanding of seminars and lectures.
As well as classes which focus on English for your specific course there are general English classes such as:
- Pronunciation Workshops
- Advanced Grammar
- Presentations and Speaking
- Academic Writing and Vocabulary
In addition to English classes, individual tutorials are available to help you with your assignments. Tutorials will help you with:
- structure
- referencing
- organisation of your ideas
- pronunciation
- explaining what you mean

FAQ’s
How much does it cost to attend classes or have tutorials?
There is no additional cost to you.
Will my In-sessional English Support teacher proof read my work?
No. Your teacher will look at samples of your work and work with you to improve your English but will not proof read and correct your assignments.
How can I get individual English support?
You can book an appointment for a tutorial with an English teacher to work on individual issues that may not be dealt with in your class. You cannot have a tutorial appointment unless you have been regularly attending English Support classes.
When do classes take place?
Classes take place Monday-Friday during term time. All class timetables can be found on the NOW Learning Room www.now.ntu.ac.uk
Where do classes take place?
Classes take place at the City site and the Clifton campus.
Do I have to attend classes?
It may be a course requirement that you attend In-sessional classes. Please check with your Course Administrator or Programme Leader. If you wish to have individual tutorial support you must attend In-sessional English classes.
Do I have to write assignments?
You will not be expected to write assignments or do assessed homework. The work all takes place within the class.
Can I take a credit bearing English Language course?
The University Language Programme (ULP) offers credit bearing English Language modules. You should check with your Course Administrator or Programme Leader if the ULP modules will count towards your degree. Find out more about the ULP.
How do I register for In-sessional English classes?
Once you have fully enrolled at the University you will have access to on-line In-sessional English Support Learning Room. You will find timetables for all the classes here. To enrol for a class you should attend the first class and enrol in the classroom. Please check carefully which class you need to attend.
Please note: Classes and tutorials are open to International Students only. They are not open to EU students. EU students who wish to study English should consider the University Language Programme.
Classes are dependent on student numbers. If there are insufficient numbers of students attending a class it may be closed or merged with another class.
