Year abroad
All students completing two (or three) of our BA (Hons) Modern Language courses are able to spend their third year overseas engaging with the languages they are studying. NTU structures this overseas year around the innovative Placement Diploma in Language Study Abroad. This great opportunity allows you to:
- work and learn in your chosen languages
- develop your communication skills in those languages
- enhance your cultural understanding of that country
- widen their own language learning skills and techniques
- come away with an experience that will give you a real advantage when competing for the best jobs.
Our study abroad option is very flexible. You can spend half an academic year, a full academic year or a year and a half studying or working in one, two or even three countries. Although the majority of our students remain in Europe, some have travelled further afield to live, work or study in places such as China, Chile, Nicaragua and Senegal.
There are three placement options:
- a university study placement
- a British Council English language teaching assistantship
- a work placement.
Each of these options provides students with the learning opportunities necessary to achieve the programme outcomes outlined above. Some students may choose to complete shorter stays in a country where their second language is spoken.
Modern Languages students are fully briefed about the year abroad from the outset of their programme. They are provided with details of how to: apply, identify appropriate options, and prepare for the year.
