Short-listing / selection process

Once the closing date has passed, all applications are submitted to the interview panel for short-listing. The short-listing decisions are based on how well the content of the application form meets the criteria set out in the person specification.

This process will normally take between two to three weeks before the successful applicants are informed, however this can vary depending on the number of applications received.

Interview and assessment process

If you are successfully short-listed, usually there will be a one stage interview process. You will be sent either an email or letter detailing the venue, time and format of the interview process. A map will also be provided, along with an interview expenses form, so any reasonable costs incurred travelling to the University can be reimbursed.

The interview process will take place with an appropriate panel, one of whom has been fully trained in NTU recruitment and selection policy and process. You may be asked questions about any prior experiences specifically related to the job description and person specification; therefore it is helpful to have some examples in mind prior to the interview taking place.

In some instances there may be other form of occupational assessment alongside the interview, this could be:

  • Simulated exercise e.g. administration test or presentation
  • Psychometric testing - e.g. personality profiling

Decision making process

A decision will be reached by the panel within a few days following the interview process.

Should you be successful you will be offered the post subject to receipt of two references of a satisfactory standard to the University and proof of eligibility to work in the UK, i.e. passport / work permit. A start date will be agreed and a contract of employment will be issued to you.

If you are not successful on this occasion, you will receive a letter confirming this. If you wish to gain feedback you will need to request this directly from the relevant HR team who will contact the Chair of the panel on your behalf.
