Software and hardware
We predominantly use Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, but are committed to delivering specialist industry standard packages to the University's business areas and programmes of study. This means that we manage a very diverse range of products. We negotiate software licenses that benefit the University and enable us to make the basic tools you need.
We also offer a core set of applications to all users. These are typically managed centrally and deployed to all computers through the NTU wide applications from the start menu. You have access to the following, among other applications:
- Microsoft Office
- Outlook Email
- a suite of tools like Adobe Acrobat Reader and Media Players.
More specialist software is often purchased to support a specific college or business area. Access to this software is usually restricted to members of that area by username or location.

Staying safe and secure
It's crucial that your computer equipment runs securely at all times. We manage your computers to ensure that you are protected from harmful viruses and vulnerabilities. To do this, we administer your computer by ensuring that it is synchronised with the latest virus protection, patches and software updates.
This does mean that there are certain parts of the week when you may notice your computer running more slowly than usual. You may also receive an automated message to let you know that updates have been installed and that you will need to reboot your computer.
It is essential that you reboot your computer when prompted in order to ensure that the updates are applied. If you never switch it off, you are running the risk of it becoming unusable at a time when you may need it most. You are also in danger of losing or damaging your important files.
