Wireless access
Information Systems provide all NTU staff and students with access to the University's wireless service across all three sites. The wireless service is offered without charge to users on campus and supports wireless laptops, PDAs and Macs enabling access to:
- the Internet
- web-based applications like Outlook Web Access and NOW
- networked-based resources such as your home directory1 .
You may have reached this wireless information area by associating to NTU-wireless Help. In order to access the wireless service and access to resources, select a link in the Get Connected section.

NTU students
NTU students can connect to the wireless network using ntu-student. This is a secure network using WPA/WPA2 encryption.
Automatically configure your wireless connection
(Download the setup tool. Unzip the file and follow the setup guide)
Manually configure your wireless connection
NTU staff
NTU staff can connect to the wireless network using ntu-staff. This is a secure network using WPA/WPA2 encryption. The staff wireless network deploys additional security because full network access is granted to compliant clients.
NTU staff windows devices must have up to date Windows patches which can be installed via the Microsoft Windows Update service and have an anti-virus product installed. This is enforced by a Network Access Control appliance. To understand more about this, view the NAC
pages.

NTU staff and students visiting other institutions
NTU staff and students can use wireless or wired connections at other participating institutions where they use eduroam
Visiting Other eduroam sites
A list of participating HEIs can be found on the JANET web site. You may need to check with staff at the site that you will be visiting to find out what eduroam facilities are available there. Operational Status information is also available for the eduroam participants.
Once you are at the remote site you will be prompted for your eduroam username and password. You should use your normal NTU username (e.g. com3other) followed by @ntu.ac.uk and then your normal login password. Note: even though this contains an @ sign, it is not your email address, it is your login name followed by @ntu.ac.uk.
You should follow any local instructions issued by the computing service at the institute that you are visiting regarding security, access restrictions and acceptable use policies. Note that you are also still bound by the NTU Acceptable Use Policy. Where the policies and regulations differ, the most restrictive applies.
Once authenticated you should usually have access to at least web browsing. This will allow you to access your NTU email via our Outlook Web Access service for staff or for students who can use NOW . You can also access other web based NTU resources such as NTUanywhere. As a guest you will not normally have access to the visited institution's facilities such as applications, printing, etc. Access to further NTU resources are available via NTUanywhere.

Visitors: staff and students visiting from other institutions
Visitors from institutions participating in the Eduroam Service can use our wireless network to access the internet and their resources.
Accessing IT services for academic visitors to NTU
JANET is the UK's Joint Academic Network and connects the UK's education and research organisations to each other, as well as to the rest of the world through links to the global Internet. NTU participates in the JANET Eduroam service and visitors to NTU from other participating JANET UK organisations can connect to their home services using a wireless access point at NTU.
NTU has wireless access points in the major buildings on each campus. In addition to any acceptable use policies at your home institution, by using these facilities on our network you are also agreeing to the NTU Acceptable Use Policy.
Before you visit us you may want to review the additional information below and check if your organisation participates by visiting the JANET website.
Information for visitors, JANET Eduroam service
Visitors to NTU wishing to use the eduroam service should, before coming to NTU, ensure that your home institution participates in the Janet eduroam service.
Nottingham Trent University supports eduroam Tier Two using IEEE 802.1X authentication (WPA2 with AES) via the eduroam wireless SSID.
Eduroam visitors from other institutions should contact their own institution for any client configuration assistance.
Guests - NTU Visitor
The guest wireless access service (ntu-visitor) is a restricted service which is intended to provide access from a laptop or mobile device to public web pages and web-based email only.
The service is intended for guests visiting an NTU staff member or attending an NTU organised event/conference.
There is no requirement for any laptop or mobile device to be checked, configured or registered for use on the service.
A login screen will clearly set out the entitlements of the guest user and the terms of usage of the account
Guests of a member of staff at NTU
Users of the guest wireless access service must have an NTU sponsor before access can be given. If a guest comes from an organisation that is part of the international eduroam community, and they have already configured their computer at their home organisation, then they will be able to use eduroam at NTU. Otherwise, guests should use ntu-visitor.
For guests to access ntu-visitor, the staff member they are visiting must make a request to the ITS Service Desk who will create an account for the guest and a username and password will be issued for the duration of their stay.
The service is designed to provide web access for occasional use and is not suitable for ‘heavy’ internet users.
The IS Service Desk will need the following information from the staff sponsor via email:
- guest name
- organisation name
- duration of stay (period of wireless access required)
- staff member sponsoring the guest
- event/Conference name (if applicable).
Multiple accounts can also be created for NTU events and conferences. The staff member organising this should request these accounts.

Nottingham Conference Centre – Delegates
NCC delegates are administered by the NCC staff and can now use the wireless network NottinghamConferenceCentre while in the NCC. You may also be asked to use the ntu-visitor wireless network. Delegates should contact the NCC staff for information on configuration.
Members of the public
Unfortunately we cannot provide ‘free Wi-Fi’ style access for the public, e.g. in university coffee shops, or for people just walking across the campus.
1 Available with the NTU-staff and ntu-student SSIDs only.
