NTU Wireless FAQs
I share a laptop and need to remove the last set of login credentials or my login credentials before I hand it back?
In MS Windows XP, when using PEAP, it caches usernames and passwords used to connect to the wireless. This is fine if it is just you using the laptop. If it's a shared laptop then the next person to use it will gain access to the wireless under you credentials. To remove your credentials simply download the clear login utility Zip and follow the instructions.

What is an access point?
An access point is a device that allows wired communication devices to connect to and from the wireless network. You need to be in range of an access point to connect to the wireless network

What is a SSID?
A SSID is an identifier for the wireless network that you want to connect to.

What SSIDs should I see in my list of available networks?

  • ntu-staff - for all staff wireless connections
  • ntu-student - for all student wireless connections
  • eduroam - for visitors from other educational institutions
  • wirelessHelp – a connection that provides help and support for NTU wireless

Why am I not seeing the SSIDs I am supposed to?
You should see all of the SSIDs listed above, as they are advertised from all Access points. If you don't see all of these, then it could be a driver issue. We would recommend ensuring your wireless card or wireless dongle driver is fully up-to-date.

What is NAC?
NAC stands for Network Access Control. It is a method of ensuring that computers that connect to the wireless network have up-to-date anti-virus products and operating systems. Those computers that are not up-to-date will be allowed temporary and restricted network access only to the internet in order to allow them to be updated.

The connection is asking me to download a NAC agent, is it safe?
Yes, a NAC agent is deployed by NTU to protect the network and its users. If you are connecting to ntu-staff you will be asked to download and install a NAC agent before you can proceed.

Windows XP keeps trying to connect to the wrong wireless network

  1. Open Start, Control Panel, Network Connections
  2. Click the right-hand mouse button on the Wireless Network Connection icon and choose Properties. Click the Wireless Networks tab
  3. In the Preferred networks list find the network you want to use (e.g. ntu-student) and keep clicking Move up to move it to the top of the list
  4. For any wireless networks you no longer use, click on them and click Remove.

What can I get access to?
Students
Using NTU-student you can access web based applications and the internet. This means access to NOW, Live @EDU and any web based applications within NTU. Further access may be available via NTUanywhere once connected to the wireless network

Staff
All university staff using NTU-staff have access to the internet and virtually NTU network resources. This means access to web based applications, shared drives and home directories.

Eduroam visitors
Those using eduroam have full access to the web, email, VPN, RDP and various other network protocols.
