For students

Students are copyright owners. As a general principle you will own the copyright in the original works you create as part of your studies with Nottingham Trent University (NTU). This reflects everyday life where you own the copyright in all the original works you create, such as your holiday photographs and emails to friends and family. There are exceptions to the general principle and these are outlined in the University Policy on Student-generated Intellectual Property (Student IP Policy).

The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA 1988) contains some exceptions which may cover some of the copying you need to do as a student.

These include:

• Non-commercial research and private study - See Section 29 of the CDPA 1988
• Criticism and review - See Section 30 of the CDPA 1988
• Instruction or examination - See Section 32 of the CDPA 1988.
