Information literacy

In support of the University's Institutional Learning and Teaching Enhancement Strategy 2006-2010, LLR aims to enhance student learning and encourage a critical, analytical and evaluative approach to information resources. In other words, our aim is to assist in the creation of an information literate university population - enhancing autonomy and the ability to learn.

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) defines information literacy as:

"Knowing when and why you need information, where to find it, and how to evaluate, use and communicate it in an ethical manner".

LLR aims to enable:

  • academic and support staff to develop specific information literacy skills required to support their work
  • students to develop relevant information literacy skills and to become independent learners
  • NTU graduates to be information literate.

More information for academic staff
If you are a member of academic staff and would like to arrange an information skills session for your students or your colleagues, please contact the appropriate Liaison Librarian for your subject area to discuss your requirements. A list of Liaison Librarians' contact details and subject areas is available on the LLR website

Liaison Librarians organise and present information skills sessions for students and staff.  Topics covered can range from general information skills to sessions tailored to a group's specific needs.  For example, topics may cover advanced research skills for dissertation preparation or current awareness services for researchers.

The Information Skills Training Rooms at Boots and Clifton libraries allow demonstrations to be performed directly on to the screens in front of the audience, as well as allowing actual hands-on activity by the participants themselves. The Boots Library training room contains 28 PCs and will seat up to 56 people. The Clifton Library training room contains 25 PCs and will seat up to 50 people. Within Brackenhurst, Room D can be used for training sessions.  It contains 24 PCs and a projector.
