Your course handbook should contain most of the information you will need to know about your studies and this should be your first port of call regarding any specific course details. However, if you would like further advice with something more general such as time management, presentation skills or essay writing techniques then the following resources may be able to help.

Learnhigher
This website offers resources and support on a wide range of study skills from preparing for presentations to note making.

NOW Study skills support
This NTU link takes you straight to a wide range of study skills guides that offer tips and activities to develop your academic studies. There are also a number of podcasts to develop your exam techniques.

MERLOT
This is a multimedia educational resource for Learning and online Teaching.

Writing@CSU
Colorado State University's writing centre has a wide range of useful resources. The writing guides and writing activities links are particularly useful.

The OWL at Purdue
This site examines the writing process and looks at issues such as; how to get started, writers block and understanding writing assignments to name a few.

Unilearning
The University of Wollongong in Australia's website is an excellent student friendly resource. The site defines the different types of academic writing such as introductions, reports, essays etc. and has a number of activities for students to try.

The following books are available in the University library.

Pears, R. and Shields, G. (2005) Cite them Right Newcastle upon Tyne: Pear Tree Books.
This book gives you a clear step by step guide to referencing and covers the referencing of many different sources, from websites to parliamentary papers.

Cottrell, S. (2003) The Study Skills Handbook. Second edition. Hampshire. Palgrave Macmillan.
This book is designed to help students develop their study skills and includes a useful section on academic writing and what to expect whilst at University.
