ARES
Peer Assisted Learning Support (PALS)
What are PALS?
PALS are current students who have already experienced first year study at the School. They are available for one-to-one or small group sessions and will meet informally to offer advice on getting the most out of life at Brackenhurst campus as well as working with you to develop your academic writing.
Who can use PALS?
The scheme is available to all students currently studying at Brackenhurst campus.
Why use PALS?
Contact PALS if you are trying to improve your writing in your field of study, or if you have a question not related to your course. If our student mentors don't have the answer, they will point you in the direction of someone who does.
When are they available?
Use the contact details below to organise a time that is convenient for both you and your mentor.
How do I contact them?
Email PALS to request a meeting.
Drop-in Sessions
Student mentors are also available daily in Bramley Reception on the Brackenhurst campus. They will discuss any aspect of your writing, to help you perform better in assignments and exams:
- Monday, Thursday: 12 noon - 1 pm
- Tuesday: 1 pm - 2 pm
Meet the Mentors

My name is Emily Auton and I am a third year Zoo Biology student. I plan to go into research upon completion of this degree.
This will be my second year of student mentoring and I hope to help students with all aspects of their academic writing but particularly with structuring, referencing and the transition into higher education.
I have enjoyed helping students this last year with a wide range of different writing assessments and look forward to helping many more students with their work, time management skills and settling in to university.

My name is Ellie Smith and I am currently enjoying my second year studying Zoo Biology. I am a Student Mentor who specialises in helping students with issues relating to their writing.
My areas of interest are referencing, checking the structure of assignments and also ensuring that writing styles are concise and coherent.
I want to be a Student Mentor as I want to help students in their transition to Higher Education through supporting them to develop their academic writing.

My name is Emma Billingham and I am currently in my second year studying Animal Science at Brackenhurst campus. The areas of student mentoring I am most interested in are the structure of writing and referencing.
I want to be a student mentor to help students relax into higher education, aiming to assist them in attaining the standard of writing that is required at university. I am also around to help students to manage their time and workload to attain high standards of work.
