Academic student mentors

Who is the scheme for?
The scheme is aimed at students who are on an undergraduate programme within the School of Education. Our Student Mentors are keen to support students from any programme and will arrange an appointment at a time that is convenient to you. If you are on an M-level or postgraduate programme and require support please contact us to request an appointment.

What do we offer?
We can offer you academic writing support.

Why use Student Mentors?
Our Student Mentors are students within the School of Education who have been trained and are able to offer support with your academic writing, but not the content of assignments or coursework. They offer flexible hours, including twilight and evening sessions and can arrange appointments at our City site and Clifton campus.

How to access the scheme?
There will be a link on your programme learning room and information in your programme handbook on how to access this support. In addition, you can make an appointment by visiting the following people in person:

  • Deborah Bancroft-Hall (Ada Byron King, School Base)
  • Laura Oakey (LIR Reception).

Alternatively request an appointment by email.

"Thank you very much for this service; it has helped me improve my skills, not only with writing but with learning as well."

Meet the Mentors

Zoe Parsons
Zoe Parsons

Hello! My name is Zoe Parsons and I am training to be a primary school teacher on the BA (Hons.) Primary Education programme. This is a four year course and October 2012 will mark the start of my third year!

The area of mentoring that I am interested in is academic writing, with a particular focus on structuring and referencing.

I want to be a student mentor because I believe that the academic transition to degree level can prove challenging. I hope to draw on my own experiences to support students in developing their writing within the context of Education.

Sarah Parnham
Sarah Parnham

My name is Sarah Parnham and I am in my second year studying Psychology and Educational Development.

I am an academic writing mentor with a particular interest in understanding assessment criteria for assignments. This is the area I struggled with most in my first year and once I received some guidance, my grades began to improve.

I want to be a student mentor because I know how challenging academic writing can be and I want to provide the support to students that I was too shy to ask for when I first came.

Hannah Fraser
Hannah Fraser

My name is Hannah Fraser and I will be starting my second year of study at Nottingham Trent University in October 2012. I am studying Sport & Leisure and Educational Development within the School of Education. The areas of mentoring that I am interested in are academic writing and referencing.

I am thrilled to be a mentor this year so that I can help students adapt their writing to an academic standard. I am hoping that I will be able to support students with their writing and referencing to gain the confidence they need to achieve at the highest standard.

Kathryn Welch
Kathryn Welch

Hi, my name is Kathryn Welch and I am a mature student, starting my second year at Nottingham Trent University. I am studying Psychology and Special and Inclusive Education with a view to staying on at the end of the course to top up my degree with a Graduate Teaching Programme.

I am passionate about being a Student Mentor as I feel the process of mentoring can make a difference to both grades and self-confidence, hopefully making university a more enjoyable experience overall. I am particularly interested in writing to an academic standard and referencing.

As a first year I found the step from writing at college to the academic standard required in higher education to be the biggest challenge and my grades have improved steadily through the network of support that Nottingham Trent University provides to its students.
