The Student Mentor Scheme at Nottingham Trent University runs in the six schools where there is otherwise little or no other form of one-to-one writing or maths support:

  • Nottingham Business School
  • Nottingham Law School
  • School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment
  • School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences
  • School of Education
  • School of Science and Technology.

Role

Student mentors are second, third year and postgraduate students who have been trained to help other students to improve their writing, maths and other study skills. Mentors are available for one-to-one or group drop-in sessions at lunchtimes on each campus.

"I took on the role in order to support others, but found that it actually helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the course material"
(Former student mentor)

Commitment required

We are looking for students who are able to offer four hours of their time per week to help and support other students. Mentors receive payment for their time; the reward of knowing that they have been able to help a fellow student and increased employability skills.

How many mentors?

We are looking for 3-4 mentors per school as follows:

Writing mentors only:

  • Nottingham Law School
  • School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences
  • School of Education

Writing and maths mentors:

  • Nottingham Business School
  • School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment
  • School of Science and Technology

How much?

Student mentors are currently paid £8.71 per hour.
