Learning Development Team (LDT)
The Learning Development Team exists to:
Enable students to transform themselves into effective learners at University
We will do this by:
- Leading the delivery of Welcome Week and development of induction activities to support students' transition into university life
- Providing a range of workshops and support sessions delivered by student mentors and staff
- Working in partnership with academic colleagues to develop learning resources and strategies for use with students
This will be underpinned by:
- Conducting and disseminating research into students' learning needs
Study Support Coordinator
Ed Foster
Ed is the team leader and has responsibility for developing study support for NTU students. He manages the Welcome Week programme and is project leader for the HEFCE/ PHF funded HERE Project. Ed provides staff development in a wide range of learning and teaching areas and leads research into student retention and the transition into Higher Education.
Learning and Teaching Officers
The three officers play an important role coordinating NTU's Welcome Week programme, they also have the following areas of responsibility:
Sarah Johnson
Sarah has a key role developing learning resources for staff to embed into their own working practices and a large number of these are placed in NOW and the learning repository. Sarah is also the key coordinator for the Student Mentors employed by the University and is responsible for recruiting, training and supporting the academic writing mentors employed in six of the University's academic schools. She is also supporting the development of other forms of mentoring across the University including managing the Maths mentors who operate the Maths Cafes.
Sarah Lawther
Sarah's main area of work is to embed the findings of the HERE Project into NTU practice. Sarah was the main researcher at NTU for this project, which investigated issues of student retention, transition and engagement. Sarah will continue to conduct research into student retention and engagement at NTU in order to inform the work done as a team to support staff and students. Sarah is responsible for the Annual Student Writing in Transition Symposium and is involved in the practical support provided to staff and students on projects such as Welcome Week, and the development of resources and staff workshops in areas such as induction, transition and retention. Sarah also contributes to the academic workshops for students run by the team throughout the year and provides one to one writing support as needed.
Paul Molineaux
Paul has the main responsibility for coordinating the delivery of Welcome Week. In addition to this, he works with a range of media to produce materials and activities that support academic skills and the transition to HE. Paul’s role is also to improve the online presence of these materials and to manage the web pages promoting the team’s work. Paul contributes to the academic workshops run by the team throughout the year.
