The Third Annual Student Writing in Transition Symposium
14 September 2010
Over 80 delegates attended this symposium and gave attendees the opportunity to explore how students cope with the transition from learning in post-16 education to university. As this is most readily evidenced through academic writing, the symposium also focussed on student writing in the first year. The keynote speakers were Kathy Harrington and Peter O'Neill from the Write Now CETL at London Metropolitan University. Papers were also presented on current research at NTU into student learning prior to university, including reflections on a number of projects such as the new peer mentoring scheme and staff FE/HE shadowing initiative.
The Second Annual Student Writing in Transition Symposium
15 September 2009
Sally Mitchell, Thinking Writing, Queen Mary University, opened with a keynote that looked at how the creation of a college-level student writing working group had offered an opportunity for reflections about what we expect from students' writing during their time at university. A range of parallel sessions then followed that included practical writing activities to use with students, understanding diplomas and what they mean for higher education and writing in the disciplines.
