Dissemination and impact
IRep and open access
The Institutional Repository (IRep) is a record of all of the research outputs of NTU, enabling the University to share its research and intellectual outputs. Adding an open access copy of an article to IRep can improve its visibility and thus the likelihood of it being cited by others.
Bibliometrics
Bibliometrics is a term used to describe the statistical analysis of the impact of research, including the impact of an academic journal article, an individual researcher, or a particular area of research.
Research impact
Times Cited and h-index
The Web of Science database (accessed via Library OneSearch) allows you to work out who is citing your work, find out how many times an article has been cited and calculate your h-index. The h-index uses a calculation based on the citation rates of an author's published papers.
Publish or Perish
Publish or Perish is a free tool that allows you to calculate your h-index and citation count based on Google scholar rather than Web of Science. It may pick up some citations which are missed by Web of Science, such as books.
Google Scholar Citations
Google Scholar Citations allows you to check your publications' citations in Google Scholar.
Identifying journals in your field
There are a number of metrics available to help you identify journals within your field. These include Impact Factor, Eigenfactor, SCImago Journal Ranking and the Source Normalized Impact per Paper.
Impact factor and Eignefactor Score
Impact Factor is the most widely used metric to rank journals and is a measure reflecting the average number of citations to articles published in science and social science journals. The Eigenfactor Score measures the number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year.
Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is a resource which allows you to evaluate and compare journals, view the most frequently cited and highest impact journals including the Impact Factor and Eigenfactor Score (from 1995 onwards). JCR is one of the Web of Knowledge databases, and can be accessed via Library OneSearch
SCImago
An alternative to the JCR is the SCImago Journal & Country Rank. SCImago is a publicly available portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the SCOPUS database.
Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP)
Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) is a free indicator developed by Professor Henk Moed at CTWS, University of Leiden. SNIP measures contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field.
