  • You cannot reserve an item which is held at the library where you are registered.

You will be notified when the reserved item is ready. You will have three working days to collect it if you are a full-time student and ten days if you are part-time. Please collect the item from the Short Loan area in Boots and Clifton Libraries and from the ground floor of Brackenhurst Library and issue it using the self service units.

Using the self-service

You can use the self service machines to borrow and return items. They are easy to use and there are instructions by the machines. If you have any difficulties please consult a member of staff.

Items not in stock may be requested through the inter-library loans system for final year project and postgraduate work.

The standard loan period is three weeks with the following exceptions:

  • Express Loans are allocated one week with no renewals or extended vacation loans allowed.
  • Items in demand can be taken out on loan for one week. Part-time students may borrow these items for two weeks.
  • Teaching practice material can be taken out on loan for three months.
  • Long loan, selected items are allocated three months.
  • Short loan material* can be taken out on loan for four hours (red sticker) or overnight (black sticker). Overnight loans are due for return by 11 the following morning.
  • Selected reference material may be borrowed overnight.
  • Videos/DVDs are allocated one week. Part-time students can take these out for two weeks.

* Short loan material additional information
The majority of short loan stock is an overnight loan i.e. any item taken out will be due back at 11 am the next day (on Saturdays and Sundays items will be due the following Monday at 11 am). Short Loan items and videos/DVDs must be returned to the Short Loan Desk from which they were issued. One, two and three week loans may be returned to any NTU Library.

Recalls on borrowed items
It may be necessary to recall items on loan to you if they are requested by another user. We will send you a recall notice with the new due date by which the item must be returned. Part-time/distance learning students may retain their on-loan items for their full loan period, without them being recalled. If you do not return an item which has been recalled by the due date your borrowing privileges will be suspended until the item is returned. Fines are chargeable from this revised date.

May I extend the loan period?
We will send you a courtesy email two days before an item is due back so that you can return or renew it. In most cases three week loans and one week loans may be renewed up to nine times. NB: Short loan, reference material and items reserved by another reader may not be renewed. Where applicable, renewals can be done in person on the self service machines or online by signing into your account in Library OneSearch.  You can also renew your loans by contacting one of the libraries.

Reservation, overdue and recall notices
These are all sent to your NTU email account (e.g. AB123456@ntu.ac.uk ). We are unable to send notices to alternative email addresses, but you can easily set up a divert on your NTU account so that all of your email is forwarded to another email address. If you do this, you will ensure that other messages sent to your University account reach you too. If you can't take advantage of speedy email notices, you can opt out and receive your notifications by post. You need to tell us if you want to opt out or back in, so please contact one of the libraries.
