Inter-library loans and Postal Loans

Find out more about Inter Library Loans (ILL)

If you need an item which is not in stock in any of our libraries and is not available via our electronic resources, you may request an inter-library loan. Our ILL team will do their best to obtain it for you either from the British Library or from another location through the national or international inter-library loan network.

If you are a member of staff, researcher, postgraduate or an undergraduate in the final two years of your course, you are eligible to use the ILL service. Unfortunately, we are not able to process requests for first year undergraduates or external customers.

Please Note: At the moment, we are experiencing technical problems with printing electronic SED documents on campus PCs. Until a solution has been found we recommend that unless you can print at home, you should choose the 'Photocopy' option when requesting journal articles. Photocopied articles can be either posted to your home address or collected from one of the campus libraries.

How to make an ILL request

Once you have checked Library OneSearch to make sure we do not already hold the item you are looking for in our stock:

  • go to the Inter Library Loan Request Forms

  • log in using your NTU username and password if necessary
  • choose Book or Journal depending on the type of request you are making
  • fill in as much detail as you can about the request and your options to receive it
  • agree to the copyright declaration
  • submit your request.

You may find the information you want here:

If the information you want is not here, please contact the Inter Library Loans team by email, or phone us on 0115 848 2889.

Electronic deliveries
Please note: If you open up an electronic document from the British Library on a networked PC on campus or other public PC, you should print it off straight away, as you will not be able to access it again, nor will you be able to save it to a pen drive for use later. However, if you open it on your home PC, you should retain access there via Adobe for 14 days.

Postal loans

You may use the postal loan service if you are a UK based student who is one of the following:

  • registered on a distance learning course
  • on placement of a term or longer
  • referred by Student Support Services
  • referred by the Director of Library and Knowledge Resources
  • on a designated course in Nottingham Business School.
