Scholarships
We have several music scholarships and bursaries available for students at NTU.
MUSIC TUITION AWARDS
Music Tuition Awards are available to any students at NTU and are worth up to £300 per year.
Structure of the Award
• The award is open to all singers and instrumentalists intending to take music tuition whilst studying at NTU.
• It is not open to students who hold an alternative music scholarship.
• The award lasts for one academic year and students are allowed to re-audition every year if they wish.
• Between £100 and £300 may be offered to each student at the discretion of the Director of Music.
The Audition
• At each audition the candidate is asked to sing or play two contrasting pieces.
• An accompanist will be provided.
• The candidate will be asked about their musical experience and their foresight into what they think they can offer the University musically.
Expectations
• If successful, each student would be expected to be a member of at least one of the University’s musical ensembles.
ACCOMPANIST SCHOLARSHIP
The Accompanist scholarship will be offered to one or possibly two students every year.
Structure of the Scholarship
• The scholarship is open to all pianists who are of a least a Grade 8 standard.
• The award lasts for one academic year and students are allowed to re-audition every year if they wish.
• Tuition with the University’s accompanist will be given.
The Audition
• The candidate will be asked to play a piece to demonstrate their ability to the panel.
• The candidate will be given a piece of music to sight read, which will accompany either a vocalist or an instrumentalist
• The candidate will be asked about their musical experience and their foresight into what they think they can offer the University musically.
Expectations
• The candidate would be required to play in Chamber Choir / Choir rehearsals as required and also at lunchtime recitals as necessary.
CHORAL SCHOLARSHIP
Choral Scholarships are available to all singers at NTU.
Structure of the Award
• The scholarship is open to all voice types (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone and Bass).
• The scholarship lasts for one academic year and students are allowed to re-audition every year if they wish.
• Between £100 and £300 may be offered to each student at the discretion of the Director of Music, and must be spent on singing tuition with the NTU vocal teacher.
The Audition
• At each audition the candidate will be asked to sing two contrasting pieces.
• An accompanist will be provided.
• The candidate will be asked about their musical experience and their foresight into what they think they can offer the university musically.

• If successful, each student would be expected to be a member of the NTU Chamber Choir and NTU Choir.
• A Choral Scholar would be expected to perform in at least one lunchtime recital per year.
INSTRUMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP
Instrumental Scholarships are available to all instrumentalists who are of at least a Grade 7 or 8 standard.
Structure of the Award
• The scholarship is open to all instruments.
• The scholarship lasts for one academic year and students are allowed to re-audition every year if they wish.
• Between £100 and £300 may be offered to each student at the discretion of the Director of Music, and must be spent on singing tuition with the NTU vocal teacher.
The Audition
• At each audition the candidate will be asked to play two contrasting pieces.
• An accompanist will be provided
• The candidate will be asked about their musical experience and their foresight into what they think they can offer the University musically.
Expectations
• If successful, each student would be expected to be a member of the NTU Concert Band and Concert Orchestra.
• An Instrumental Scholar would be expected to perform in at least one lunchtime recital per year.
MUSIC COMPETITIONS
An Instrumental and Vocal competition will be held once every year in front of a panel and audience.
• The separate competitions would be open to any student studying at NTU.
• Depending on how many applicants apply each year, there may be preliminary rounds before the final.
• Competitors must offer a programme with a minimum of 2 contrasting pieces and it must not last any longer than 20 minutes.
Prizes
A certificate will be presented to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners and a cash prize of £100, £50 an £25 will be given respectively.
YOUTH CHOIR UK CHORAL SCHOLARSHIP
We are delighted to be able offer a choral scholarship in partnership with Youth Choir UK, to talented singers at the University. The winning candidate will receive a year's free membership to Youth Choir UK, worth £200. This is an auditioned scholarship.
ALUMNI INSTRUMENTAL AWARD
We present this award in association with the NTU Alumni Association. We will award an instrument of a professional level to a student who we feel is performing to an extremely high standard. The student will keep the instrument for the duration of their course and will be expected to contribute to a musical ensemble. This is an auditioned award.
