Overview

The Economics Division of Nottingham Business School offers a distinctive range of courses, applicable research and potential to engage in collaborative activities with a wide variety of organisations.

The consistently high standards achieved by students on our courses are confirmed by rigorous quality assurance processes which draw upon a range of external expertise and on benchmarks from across the higher education sector.

An enthusiastic and well-qualified team of economists offer a variety of specialist expertise and approaches to the study of economic aspects of the wider world in which we live, including those areas most closely associated with leading practitioners of imaginative business and organisational management.

A member of our team, Dean Garratt, was recently awarded the annual Higher Education Academy Economics Network Outstanding Teaching Award. The department links productively with the Academy, whose admirable Why Study Economics? initiative reflects our own enthusiasm for enhancing the appeal and appreciation of what an imaginative application of our subject has to offer the world.

Specialist original research in Economics is conducted to internationally-recognised standards by members of our team, currently including studies of the development of betting and gaming, developments in and of the European Union and the implications of employment for work-life balance. Research outputs include articles in leading journals together with a healthy stimulus for student learning and staff development.

Research by the division

There is an active and inclusive research culture in the division, with a programme of regular seminars by external and internal speakers involving both staff and postgraduate students. Economics at NTU is also the editorial base for the journal Economic Issues, reflecting the calibre of our research and further enhancing links with the wider research community.

Research findings are disseminated at an early stage via two discussion paper series reflecting interests in Applied Economics and Policy and Political Economy.

Copies of recent working papers by Economics staff, are compiled on the NBS research web pages.
