Case study: Delivering business benefits whilst developing managers

For a number of years we have worked closely with a well-known international business and market leader whose success has focused on a total commitment to both customers and quality. Our challenge was to design and implement a Management Development Programme that could operate successfully within a challenging and fast-moving environment and also add immediate value to a successful business.

Design
The most important requirements were the need to reflect, and work with, the strong corporate culture within the business, and to fully integrate company-specific policies, systems and procedures. The result was a programme with a number of additional and/or company-specific modules and workshops alongside an agreement for effective joint working, particularly in delivery.

Delivery
Two key factors ensured effective and successful delivery. The first was the substantial involvement of both senior managers and trainers within the business. The second, and equally important, was the way in which the culture of the organisation was reflected in the programme delivery, in particular by delivering intensive, fast-moving and challenging events with strong support to reflect the realities of managing and working in the business.

Impact and value
The programme was seen as having a positive and significant impact. Whilst developing the managers, all participants were required to produce examples of business changes they had introduced directly as a result of the programme, to quantify the benefits of these to the business, and to present this to senior managers.
