The Business School's research strategy supports a key aim of the University's strategic plan, namely 'to be recognised nationally and internationally for the effectiveness of our teaching and the relevance of our research'. The research strategy itself places a particular focus on application (or applied research) and on the international standing and recognition of research work.

Much of the research at NBS is, by its nature, international in focus, design, execution and impact. Links are encouraged between NBS researchers and their counterparts abroad, and a number of research projects are conducted in collaboration with institutions and individuals from outside the UK.

Approximately half of the people enrolled on the Research Degrees Programme of the Business School are international (non-UK) students. A number of doctoral students are undertaking their research in other countries on a distance learning basis, while others based at NBS choose to undertake some of their fieldwork abroad.
