SAMS Workshop
The Realities of Researching Under-represented Groups in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs)
A Society for the Advancement of Management Studies (SAMS) and Nottingham Business School funded workshop
Hosted by Professor Clare Brindley, Dr Carley Foster and Dr Dan Wheatley
This one-day workshop explored how to research under-represented groups in SMEs and was open to:
- early career researchers
- academics
- doctoral students
- practitioners
- industry experts.
The workshop's aim was to enhance the skills of academics and doctoral students in terms of researching under-represented groups of individuals who are self-employed, such as women, ethnic minorities, older entrepreneurs and those with disabilities.
It featured:
- a plenary session
- talks from prominent academics and SME owners
- round-table discussions to encourage the sharing of knowledge.
The workshop was a great success, giving researchers the opportunity to network and familiarised academics with the challenges of researching SMEs and the sharing of best practice. It provided a resource to contribute to the methodological training of DBA / PhD students and enhance the tool-kit of SME researchers by providing an evidenced based resource.
