Introduction
Transport already contributes 61.5% to world petroleum consumption and 22.3% to global CO2 emissions in 2010 (IEA, 2012). Of the 6755.8 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2010 from the transport sector, road transport accounted for 71%. Without strategic innovations in the automotive industry and transport management system the current state of the global transport sector is not sustainable.

The long term sustainable solutions are likely to emerge from the interplay of the economic, environmental, social and technological factors. Meanwhile, firms are faced with increasing pressures to develop strategies that enable their business to not only grow in competitive global markets but to become socially and environmentally responsible.

Sustainability as a theoretical concept has been increasingly debated and researched in recent years. However, sustainable mobility with a special reference to sustainable development of the automotive industry and transportation sector is under-researched.

In response to the challenge of managing sustainable mobility we are organising an inaugural international symposium to provide a platform for businesses, academics, and policymakers to explore strategies and policies that will help the automotive industry and transportation sector to embark on a sustainable path to future growth and development (WBCSD, 2007; World Bank, 2008).

The symposium will critically debate the following topics:

  • Low carbon vehicle technologies including battery powered electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), biofuel vehicles (BFVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs)
  • Low carbon transport systems
  • Energy market and policy analysis
  • Alternative energies including biofuels
  • Corporate sustainability and sustainable mobility
  • Venture capital and the development of low carbon vehicles
  • Socio-economic analysis of sustainable mobility.
