Speaker biography
A respected botanist, David Bellamy, has written more than 45 books and 80 scientific papers relating to ecology and the environment. He has also presented on more than 400 television shows, and is recognised and appreciated by audiences for his boundless enthusiasm.
Botanist, author, broadcaster and environmental campaigner, David Bellamy was born in London, England in 1933. He trained as a botanist at Durham University, where he later held the post of Senior Lecturer in Botany until 1982, and still holds the post of Honorary Professor for Adult and Continuing Education. He was made Special Professor of Botany at the University of Nottingham in 1987 and is an Honorary Professor of the University of Central Queensland.
He first came to public prominence as an environmental consultant at the time of the 1967 Torrey Canyon disaster. His first appearance on television was in 1970, with Life in Our Sea.
Bellamy has held top positions with a number of national and international environmental organisations. He is the founder, along with David Shreeve and The Conservation Foundation – which he also set up – of the Ford European Conservation Awards.
