Student Volunteering Week at Nottingham Trent University, February 21-27
A courtyard in Hyson Green, Nottingham, is to receive a much-needed makeover as part of Student Volunteering Week. A group of Nottingham Trent University students will be revamping the area at the Partnership Council’s headquarters on Gregory Boulevard as part of their week-long programme of activities.
The work, which will be taking place on Wednesday, will include repainting tables and chairs, clearing leaves, replacing plants with new ones and installing trellises.
Student Volunteering Week, organised by Student Volunteering England, coincides with the Government initiative, Year of the Volunteer 2005 - a year-long campaign to increase opportunities for volunteering and to encourage more members of the public to devote some time to their community. A theme is devoted to each month – February’s being Youth Volunteering Month.
Nottingham Trent University students will be taking part in Worldvision’s 24-hour famine over Monday and Tuesday, helping to raise funds for children in Africa affected by AIDS.
And on Thursday pupils from the William Sharpe Comprehensive School in Bilborough will visit the university’s Clifton Campus to take part in a range of sporting activities. Pupils can learn the basics of trampolining from student Stephanie Coyte, a former member of the Great Britain Senior Trampolining Team. There will also be cheerleading, volleyball, table tennis and sports hall athletics.
On Friday students can pay £1 to buy a sketch pad to doodle their favourite thing as part of National Doodle Day. There will also be chance to contribute towards a giant doodle which will be donated to Clinic 2 at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, which works with people with epilepsy. The money raised from the day will go to Epilepsy Action and The Neurofibromatosis Association.
Throughout the week there will be recruitment drives at the university’s three campuses, promoting student volunteering and encouraging students to get involved.
